Robot
A group of previous 8th graders volunteered many hours to build an ROV (remotely controlled vehicle). Upon its completion, it was named ScubaDooba Doo. It is a PVC frame with 3 propellers and equipped with an underwater camera. It has been completed and shipped to Antarctica. Ms. Ellwood will launch it while she is in Antarctica. Update Success! The ROV ScubaDooba Doo had its first swim in the Antarctic waters. View her journal, photos and video at http://www.polartrec.org/node/6881 Some very exciting news is coming from Antarctica! Ms. Ellwood, the 8th grade science teacher, reports success with ScubaDooba Doo! ScubaDooba Doo is a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that was created by last year’s 8th grade students! The vehicle has 3 propellers, a PVC frame and underwater camera. The ROV was launched in the icy waters of Antarctica and provided photos and video under the ice! A flag created by Giselle was also attached for the inaugural “swim.” Other scientists in the area gathered round and cheered the students’ success! This project was developed to correlate with the launch of Dr. Doran’s ROV, called ENDURANCE. Ms. Ellwood has been providing experiential ways for students and teachers to duplicate research skills and task performed in Antarctica. For more information and video of both of the ROVs, go to http://ryejrhigh.org/ellwood. From there, you can click on her journal index and go back to the summer’s entries too. Another Update Rye students were spotlighted in the Exploratorium's Ice Stories. Flag
These flags were created to accompany projects to Antarctica! Each had a different mission. This flag is traveling with the student-created robot called ScubaDooba Doo. This flag is traveling on the ODEN, an ice breaker heading for McMurdo station. Project overview This flag is also going to fly on the ODEN. Project overview |
